Free food for rail top-class passengers

PASSENGERS in the top two classes on the Shanghai-Beijing high-speed railway will be offered free catering, snacks and newspapers when the line opens by the end of this month.

Second-class passengers will just get a free bottle of water although they will be able to buy meals and snacks.

The price for a meal onboard the train will be set at 75 yuan (US$11.6) and snacks will be available for 25 yuan. Ticket prices on the new service range from 410 yuan to 1,750 yuan.

There are 24 seats in the business-class carriage and four first-class carriages with more than 200 seats in each bullet train which can carry about 1,000 passengers.

Passengers can stretch out and go to sleep, watch TV and listen to radio in the business carriage.

Blanket, slippers, eyeshades and towels will also be offered to first-class and business passengers, like those on flights.

Special waiting lounges have been set up at main stations along the 1,318-kilometer route for passengers in the train's top two classes.
