Free-ride scheme crams Guangzhou subways
SEVERAL Metro stations were forced to close temporarily yesterday as Guangzhou's subway system received 50 percent more passengers on the first day of a 30-day free-ride program.
More than 6 million people thronged Metro lines in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, forcing some stations on Metro Line 1, 3 and 5 to close for five to ten minutes during peak hours, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
Monday was the first day of the 30-day free public transport program as Guangzhou began to enforce alternative-day driving based on the last digit of the license plate to ease traffic in the city as it hosts the Asian Games and Asian Para Games.
Long lines of passengers waiting to enter the stations were seen in several Metro stations and people had to wait several trains before they could get on.
The Metro operator advised people to avoid rush hours, choose alternative transportation means and take the Metro in civilized manner to ensure the smooth operation of the subways.
Traffic restrictions are imposed between 7am to 8pm on November 1 to 29 and on December 5 to 21 and the free-ride program extends to the end of this month.
