French reporter is refused China press card
CHINA’S foreign ministry confirmed on Saturday that a Beijing-based correspondent for French news magazine L’Obs had been refused an extension to her press credentials after she “blatantly championed acts of terrorism and slaughter of innocent civilians” in her writing.
In a report dated November 18, Ursula Gauthier, a correspondent for L’Obs since 2009, criticized China’s crackdowns on terrorist attacks in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and questioned China’s solidarity with France to fight terrorism after the November attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead.
She claimed that the violent terror attacks in Xinjiang were not part of the global terrorism, nor had foreign ties.
Gauthier was no longer “suitable” to be allowed to work in China because she had supported “terrorism and cruel acts” that killed civilians and refused to apologize for her words, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang said.
“China has always protected the legal rights of foreign media and foreign correspondents to report within the country, but China does not tolerate the freedom to embolden terrorism,” Lu said in a statement.
In a poll run on the Chinese website of Global Times, 94 percent of respondents supported the ministry’s decision not to renew Gauthier’s press credentials.
“Why shouldn’t China crack down on terrorists when France and other countries in the world are doing so?” wrote a person using the name “Wang Jiahao.”
Foreign journalists face losing their work permits if they violate China’s regulations on news coverage by permanent offices of foreign media organizations.
These state that reporters must abide by the laws, regulations and rules of China, observe the professional ethics of journalism, conduct news coverage and reporting activities on an objective and impartial basis, and not engage in activities that are incompatible with the nature of the organizations or the capacity as journalists.
