Fresh from Tibet by train
A train filled with bottles of Tibetan water left Lhasa, capital of the autonomous region in southwest China, yesterday, heading for Ningbo in east China’s Zhejiang Province.
It is the first of a regular service bringing Tibet’s drinking water to China’s coast areas.
Tibet is rich in water and produced over 400,000 tons of drinking water last year, but transport costs made it difficult to reach the coast market.
Fresh water is a new pillar of economic growth, and the region plans to raise annual production to 5 million tons in the next few years.
