Fried snacks contain no squid or chicken as claimed
TWO unlicensed food factories in central Hunan Province were shut down yesterday and more than 90,000 packs of shoddy snack products such as "Shredded Squid" and "Spicy Shredded Chicken" were seized.
Law enforcement officers from the Hunan Province Quality Inspection Bureau raided the underground factories in Xiangtan City yesterday afternoon when workers were busy processing the food, Hunan Morning News reported.
One factory owner admitted that they just mixed favoring and coloring ingredients in wheat gluten to make the fried snacks taste like they contained squid and chicken.
Officers also found the two owners printed fake factory addresses on their packaging to deceive customers and law enforcement units.
The confiscated products were worth about 200,000 yuan (US$31,431). Their targeted consumers were schoolchildren and rural villagers, the officers said.
