From under rubble, a cry of ‘Help dad!’
LUO Faming and his wife had to dig their four children from the rubble of their house in Yingpan Village in Ludian County’s Longtoushan Town, yesterday’s Yunnan Info Daily reported.
The couple were picking red peppers in the yard while their children were watching TV when their wood-and-brick house suddenly began to shake and collapse around them.
Luo heard the oldest daughter cry out: “Help dad!” With hoes in their hands, the couple rushed onto the debris to dig out the three girls and a boy, the youngest, with help of neighbors.
“I was reassured a bit when I found my eldest son and saw him alive,” Luo said.
Three children were injured in the collapse, the son quite badly.
A shelf beside the TV was thought to have protected them from more serious injuries.
The couple, each carrying two children on their backs, then set out on walk of more than 10 kilometers to the Ludian County No. 1 People’s Hospital. It was a journey that took them nearly two hours.
The newspaper didn’t say how old the children were.
Wang Jiao, mother of a 3-year-old boy, also walked more than 10 kilometers from her home to take her son to the hospital.
Wang said she and her husband were working in the fields when the earthquake struck.
They rushed home to see that many houses had collapsed. Her father-in-law was killed and three relatives were severely injured. Her son had injuries to his head and feet.
Wang took to mountain tracks and followed rivers for one and a half hours before a motorist picked them up and took them to the hospital.
