Fugitive embezzler apprehended by Beijing police
A former supermarket manager who fled to Thailand after suspectedly embezzling public funds has been seized by police in an international manhunt.
The suspect, surnamed Zhang, 36, a manager of an office supplies supermarket in Beijing, was alleged to ask a financial staff member to transfer 14 million yuan (US$2.3 million) from the supermarket's account to his personal account on July 30, 2013 in the name of procurement, according to the Beijing police on Wednesday.
Zhang then transferred the money to Thailand. He fled to Cambodia with his parents on August 4, 2013 and arrived in Thailand later.
Zhang illegally obtained Thai nationality and crossed into Chinese borders three times with a Thai passport, according to the police.
With coordination from Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the Thai government revoked Zhang's passport. He was caught at a Thai airport on Dec. 1, 2014 and was turned to Beijing police on Dec. 14.
Chinese police have seized more than 400 suspects from 60 countries and regions in an international manhunt called Operation Fox Hunt since July, targeting corrupt officials and economic criminals.
