Fugitive found by police working as prison guard

A MAN on the run for 10 years after allegedly beating his wife with a brick was found by police working as a prison guard in an east China city.

Authorities are now having to explain how they hired a fugitive.

Wang Zhijia allegedly left his wife with severe head injuries after attacking her during a fight at their home in Dengfeng City in central Henan Province in May 2001.

Afterwards, he fled the city and disappeared, Dahe Daily reported yesterday.

Wang traveled to Lixin County in Anhui Province where he faked a new identity using his brother's personal details.

With this, Wang applied for the position of an auxiliary police officer with the local Public Security Bureau and was employed in 2008.

Two months ago, he was transferred to work as a prison guard.

Wang was held by police on Wednesday.

The director of the Lixin Public Security Bureau, surnamed Yu, told the newspaper an internal inquiry is being conducted to establish how they ended up hiring a fugitive as a police officer and prison guard.

Yu said Wang was a temporary worker.

Dengfeng police increased efforts to locate Wang as part of a nationwide campaign to track down fugitives.

They discovered traces of Wang's true identity while checking his brother's information.
