Fugitive serial killer gunned down in Chongqing
CHINA'S most wanted fugitive Zhou Kehua exchanged gunshots with police before he was shot dead this morning in Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, police told the state-run CCTV.
The 42-year-old serial killer who murdered nine people and injured five others in the past eight years was spotted at 6:45am in the Tongjiaqiao area in the city's Shapingba District and two officers followed him into a lane.
Zhou suddenly turned around and fired three shots at the two plainclothed officers. One officer hid himself behind a pole, another clung to a wall. They shot Zhou dead with four bullets, CCTV said.
Police found two pistols at Zhou's side, 300 yuan (US$47.16) in cash and some tickets in his pocket.
Chonqqing police said they found the trail of Zhou in a downtown shopping center on August 11, one day after he killed one woman and injured two men in an armed robbery outside a local bank office.
But he did not escape into the Gele Mountain where he was believed hiding. To confuse him, police and troops were still sent to the mountain in a large-scale manhunt while special squads closed in on him in downtown, CCTV said.
Zhou's body has been taken away and many police are guarding the scene.
