Fugitive starves himself beyond recognition
A hit-and-run fugitive worked so hard to lose weight that police could hardly recognize him when he was caught two years later.
The 27-year-old suspect surnamed Zhang knocked down a man in 2009 when he was driving without a license in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. He fled the scene and hid in the neighboring city of Wenzhou. The victim is disabled after the accident, Zhejiang Daily reported today.
Zhang adopted a cruel diet to lose weight so that he could escape police manhunt. He worked night shifts and ate only one bun each meal no matter how hungry he was.
After he slimmed down, he brought a fake ID card and went recognized in a few close encounters with policemen.
However, he responded when police called his nickname in an Internet cafe early this month, revealing his true identity. Zhang has been brought back to Ningbo and will face criminal and civil charges.
