Fugitive threatened to detonate grenade

A FUGITIVE wanted for armed robbery threatened to blow himself up with a grenade when police tried to arrest him.

Police received a tip-off that Tan Xuegui was trying to visit one of his accomplices at a prison in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to the China News Service.

Officers in Liuzhou City rushed to the prison in Liuzhou's Liucheng County on Sunday.

When they entered the prison's visiting room, Tan shot at them. An officer was wounded but two of his colleagues snatched the gun away.

Tan then threatened to detonate a grenade he took from his pocket but he was subdued by officers and prison guards.

Police seized weapons and ammunition including the pistol and the grenade.

Tan is suspected of two armed robberies in Guangxi's Laibin City and another 20 robberies in neighboring Heshan City.

He is also said to have been involved in two fatal attacks in Liuzhou.
