Fujian police kill suspect in gang attacks

Police in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province said today that they shot two robbery suspects, killing one, after the men resisted arrest and injured five policemen in a raid Monday.

Police said the two were among nine suspects targeted for arrest in the raid. All of them were members of a gang that carried out robberies at construction sites with sticks, hammers and other weapons.

According to the police investigation, the gang had hurt at least 37 people and stolen more than 1 million yuan (US$146,218) worth of goods from construction sites in Quanzhou since January.

On Monday, police were pursuing a white mini-van used by the gang. When the vehicle was stopped, the suspects came out wielding sticks and hurling bricks at the police. Five police were injured in the operation.

Police fired a warning shot, but the suspects refused to surrender. Police then shot the two and arrested the others.

The gang has more than 20 members, according to the police, who said they were still hunting for those at large.
