Full speed ahead for Rail projects
CHINA is to speed up railway construction in central and western regions to boost economic growth, Premier Li Keqiang said yesterday.
In a message to a work conference on regional railway development in southwest China’s Chongqing, Li said railway construction was crucial to steadying growth, economic restructuring and improving public welfare.
China will continue to focus on developing major railway projects in central and western regions to boost growth, he added.
Local governments should reform investment and financing mechanisms, such as introducing more social capital to support railway project development, Li said, and make coordinated efforts to streamline approvals and facilitate land acquisition and relocation.
China aims to invest more than 800 billion yuan (US$130 billion) to put more than 8,000 kilometers of additional railway lines into operation this year.
Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai, who was at the conference, said local governments should optimize construction management of current projects, ensure timely and smooth running of operational railways, start new projects orderly and maintain high quality and work safety.
Li, who was on a two-day inspection trip to northeast China’s Jilin Province that ended on Friday, also visited a local railway transit vehicle company. He encouraged Chinese equipment makers to integrate resources and seek international capacity cooperation to enhance their competitive edge and boost domestic economic growth.
During a university visit, he said students should prioritize study while engaging in more social practices such as internships or setting up their own companies.
