Furniture maker threatens to sue

A SHANGHAI-BASED furniture manufacturer said yesterday it may sue a television station over claims its Italian furniture is in fact made in China.

DaVinci Furniture Co Ltd, which faced similar accusations earlier this year, said it is considering a lawsuit against Guangdong STAR TV.

On Monday, a Guangdong STAR TV program claimed many so-called imports were made in Shunde District of Foshan, in south China's Guangdong Province.

Moreover, the construction process uses harmful chemicals, it alleged.

Program makers produced a "DaVinci Shunde branch" receipt and a worker told reporters that DaVinci entrusted them to produce furniture.

But DaVinci said yesterday that it has never had a branch in Shunde.

And while there is a company called Shunde DaVinci Furniture Industry Co Ltd, the Shanghai-based firm said they are not connected.

DaVinci accused the TV station of damaging its reputation.

"We require Guangdong STAR TV to correct its report and apologize or we will take legal action," said DaVinci.

The company said that it will also complain to the country's authorities on news and publishing.

In its statement, DaVinci also said that similar accusations made in a July report on China Central Television were false.

CCTV alleged that some furniture DaVinci claimed was made in Italy was actually manufactured in China, transported to Italy and then shipped back to China in order to qualify for a "Made in Italy" label.

The accusations received widespread publicity, but DaVinci dismissed them, insisting all its furniture bearing the label "Made in Italy" was manufactured there.

Entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities inspected DaVinci's customs record and said some so-called imported furniture was actually made in Zhejiang Province.

However, the authorities have yet to reach a final conclusion.

DaVinci said it has always cooperated with the authorities and was trying to settle disputes with consumers.

"We hope the authorities will provide a fair conclusion," said the company.
