Fury at playground funeral

A SCHOOL official in Zhejiang Province has been suspended after renting out the playground for a lavish funeral, Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday.

Teachers at Xinhe Middle School in Wenling City were outraged when mourners fired cannon, played funeral music and wailed for hours on the morning of March 4, a day when pupils were in class.

When students looked out the window, they saw the playground filled with a fleet of nine flower-decked stretch limos, luxury cars, a row of 16 gold-painted cannon, and more than a thousand monks and mourners paying tribute to an elderly woman whose portrait hung above a stage.

The woman's six children were all entrepreneurs who had become rich in real estate, hotel, mining and manufacturing businesses.

They each paid 1 million yuan (US$152,133) to hold the funeral for their mother who had raised them single-handedly, according to local residents.

The Wenling City government convened a meeting shortly afterward to deal with the aftermath and to punish those held responsible.
