Fuzhou tops list of hottest cities

FUZHOU City in southeastern China has been named as the country's hottest major city over the past decade, followed by Hangzhou, Chongqing and Changsha.
Fuzhou, capital city of Fujian Province, recorded a total of 375 days where temperatures reached more than 35 degrees Celsius during the 10-year period, while Hangzhou had 355 days, Chongqing Municipality 343 and Changsha 326, according to a list compiled by Song Yingjie, a weatherman with China Central Television.
His list covers the 10 hottest provincial capitals across the country from 2000 and 2009.
Traditionally, Chinese people refer to Wuhan, Changsha, Chongqing and Hangzhou as the "Four Stoves," or China's hottest cities.
But Song ruled Wuhan out from the "Four Stoves" and put it back in 5th place as it had registered only 305 high-temperature days over the past decade.
Haikou, Nanchang, Guangzhou, Xi'an and Nanning took 6th to 10th places, all having had more than 200 high-temperature days during the same period.
Nine out of the 10 cities on the list are located in the downstream area of the Yangtze River in south China, an area which is now enduring a prolonged heat wave that is forecast to continue for at least another three to five days.
The National Meteorological Center issued an alert yesterday warning of the most powerful heat wave to hit the country this year.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 40 degrees in Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Hunan provinces, it said.
The extreme heat that had baked north China for three weeks swept to the south at the end of last month.
The lingering hot weather in north China led to several heat-related deaths and left many homes in Beijing without power as electricity transformers broke down in the searing heat.
