GM radiation assurances

SHANGHAI General Motors yesterday sought to reassure motorists that its Chevrolet Cruze emits levels of electromagnetic radiation well within safe limits.

This follows media reports claiming the car emits levels of electromagnetic radiation that could be dangerous.

The flagship venture of General Motors Corp in China said inspections by an affiliate of Chinese Academy of Sciences showed that the 1.6-liter Chevrolet Cruze SL model has a maximum electromagnetic level of 0.1376 microteslas.

The safe exposure level is 100 microteslas, according to China's recommended standards.

Earlier this month, a Cruze owner recorded radiation emissions of 15 microteslas from his car, using a borrowed testing machine.

He posted his results on Weibo microblog and raised concerns, stating that the UK has set its safety threshold below 0.4 microteslas.

Xu Jie, head of the Physical and Chemical Research Center of SAC, said the owner's results may be affected by other sources of radiation.

"Test results vary depending on testing equipment and the environment," said Xu.

GM reiterated that its models meet national standards.
