Gaiman joins Monkey King team
HOLLYWOOD writer Neil Gaiman has joined the production team of a 3D trilogy about Monkey King, a classic Chinese fiction figure, the films' chief producer and director Zhang Jizhong announced in Beijing yesterday.
Gaiman is an award-winning author and Hollywood screenwriter with experiences in screenplay adaptations, including Robert Zemeckis's "Beowulf" in 2007 and "Coraline," the stop-motion production of Gaiman's novel of the same name, in 2009.
Gaiman is a long-time fan of the Monkey King story and has traveled to China several times to experience that journey, Zhang said.
Gaiman's understanding of the story, awareness of Chinese culture, and passion for the subject made him "very suitable" for this job.
The first part of the Monkey King trilogy is expected to hit theaters in 2012.
Monkey King is one of the main characters in Xiyouji, or Journey to the West, one of the greatest classic novels of Chinese literature.
