Gales, rain cause chaos in Hainan

Six crew members of a cargo boat were reported missing as Typhoon Haiyan brushed past China’s southern island province of Hainan yesterday.

They were lost in the South China Sea after a rope was cut in the storm, causing the ship to drift from its mooring at Sanya Port, Xinhua news agency reported.

A rescue team has been sent to search for survivors but strong gales and torrential rain are making conditions difficult, according to the news agency.

Two workers were rescued in Sanya after their work sheds collapsed on them in the gales and two fishermen were saved after a boat incident.

Haiyan is the strongest typhoon to hit China this year and the China Meteorological Administration has announced its highest typhoon alert for the storm which led to hundreds of flights being canceled and the calling back to port of more than 400 boats, Xinhua said.

The gales and rainstorms have also cut power supplies, uprooted trees and led to waterlogging in some urban areas of Sanya.

As of 3pm yesterday, local government authorities in Hainan had relocated about 133,000 residents to avoid further risks, Xinhua said.

Torrential rain since yesterday morning led to Sanya Phoenix International Airport canceling 207 flights, affecting more than 16,00 passengers. The airport suspended all flights at noon and closed the road leading to the airport due to the heavy rain.

China Southern Airlines canceled all 55 flights to and from Sanya. The airline said they had informed customers by phone, text messages and e-mail and would provide refund and rebooking services for free. Travelers can dial 95539 for more information.

Juneyao Airlines also canceled its flights from Shanghai to Sanya and customers can dial 95520 for more information.

Weather officials say the typhoon is moving toward China’s southern region of Guangxi.
