'Gallants' tops list at HK film awards

ACTION comedy "Gallants" was named best picture at the 30th Hong Kong Film Awards late last night.

The story of a kung fu master who wakes from a coma to train his former students for one last tournament also swept the supporting role awards, with Teddy Robin and Susan Shaw winning in their categories.

Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark was named best director for his fantasy epic "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame."

Its female star, Carina Lau, won best actress.

Best actor was Nicholas Tse in "The Stool Pigeon."

Other winners were:

Screenplay: Pang Ho-cheung and Heiward Mak, "Love In a Puff."

New performer: Hanjin Tan, "Bruce Lee, My Brother."

Cinematography: Peter Pau, "Confucius."

Editing: Cheung Ka-fai, "Ip Man 2."

Art direction: James Choo, "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame."

Costume and make-up: Bruce Yu, "Detective Dee."

Action choreography: Sammo Hung, "Ip Man 2."

Original score: Teddy Robin and Tommy Wai, "Gallants."

Original song: "Here to Stay," music, lyrics and performed by Jun Kung.

Sound: Wang Danrong and Zhao Nan, "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame."

Visual effects: Lee Yong-gi and Nam Sang-woo, "Detective Dee."

New director: Felix Chong, "Once a Gangster."

Asian film: "Confessions" (Japan).
