Gambling Website bust

POLICE have busted a major online gambling ring in Beijing involving 52,000 customers with record bets worth 2.1 billion yuan (US$310 million) and arrested 120 suspects.

Thirteen core members were taken into custody in April, when others were also detained, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.

The group organized games like roulette, baccarat and poker on a Philippine-based Website named "Sun City," which had tens of thousands of registered members from 21 provinces including Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and Fujian Province.

The gambling club developed with the help of thousands of agents and promoters. Gamblers could get money by winning bets or introducing other people to participate.

Police said they caught one of the operator's of the Website surnamed Zhao in April. He lost his house and car worth 1 million yuan within three years due to gambling debts.

The Ministry of Public Security has ordered all police departments to aggressively go after gambling Websites, especially those that take bets on the FIFA World Cup.
