Gambling millionaires detained

TWENTY-ONE rich businessmen, all worth more than 10 million yuan (US$1.46 million), have been detained in Qingdao, Shandong Province, for gambling after they were caught in a hotel on September 4, today's Qilu Evening News reported.

Police seized HK$301,500 (US$38,902.16), 328,300 yuan and US$9,500 in cash as well as five mobile phones and four luxury sedans, the report said.

Police said the gamblers are natives of Yongkang City in Zhejiang Province who often do business in Qingdao and other cities. Two of them were found to be worth more than 100 million yuan.

A gambler surnamed Hu who had driven his Bentley to the game told police he was invited to the event by a friend surnamed Gao. He brought US$9,500 for the night, which he described as "relaxing entertainment."

Gambling is illegal in China.
