Gang arrested for abducting and raping women
A gang of 15 young men aged 15 to 24 in northwest Shaanxi Province have been arrested for raping 17 girls in the past three years, but only two of victims reported to the police, the local Huashang News reported.
Police of Weinan City received a report on April 10 that a 21-year-old woman was dragged into a car by two men while she was walking on the street the night before. She was raped by seven men that night.
But the woman was so frightened that she couldn't give accurate description of the criminals to the police, making investigation difficult.
An opportunity showed up when the police got a report that an 18-year-old girl was raped by five men on April 23, also abducted with a car.
The officers soon captured one suspect on April 30 and found the car he used in the crime. With his confession, the officers nabbed other gang members.
The 15 suspects confessed that they began to rape young women in 2009, first gang-raping their ex-girlfriends and then young women lured through social networking websites.
They were emboldened because few victims ever reported to police and they began to abduct women at night using a car.
Weinan police said that only two victims reported their rapes to them, and the silence of so many victims encouraged the gang's criminal activities.
