Gang arrested for forcing 18 people into slavery

EIGHT suspects have been detained in Harbin, capital of northeastern Heilongjiang Province for abducting 18 people from streets and keeping them as slave workers.

The gang kidnapped homeless people and migrant workers off the streets, threatening them with knives, and held them in captivity in a rural factory where they were forced to do slave labor, the Heilongjiang Morning News reported today.

The slave workers were often beaten up by the suspects with an electric baton if they refused to work or attempted to escape.

Harbin police said all the slave workers have been freed and sent to their homes. The officers seized the suspects after receiving a report on February 17 that they tried to kidnap four people from an ATM booth on Xiangzheng Road.

A 52-year-old man suffered a fracture in the leg and knife cuts in his face as he resisted the kidnappers. The gangsters drove away in a van with two captives. Police checked security footages and tracked down the suspects.
