Gang boss sentenced to death
A COURT has sentenced the boss of a mafia-like gang in central China to death and the gang's 50 members to varying prison terms, officials said yesterday.
The Intermediate People's Court of Xiangtan, Hunan Province, found the gang led by Wang Yongzhong guilty of gambling, drug trafficking, assaults and holding people against their will. The group made illegal profits of more than 10 million yuan (US$1.65 million), the court said.
Wang opened his first teahouse in Xiangtan in 1998 and from there he built his network, authorities said. The gang ran into trouble after Wang ordered subordinates to attack a villager's home, killing the owner and injuring three others in 2010.
Wang was sentenced to death on Friday and was ordered by the court to pay 2 million yuan fine.
The court sentenced the primary attacker, Zhang Dijun, in the 2010 case to death with a two-year reprieve.
