Gang jailed for robbing tourists to Vietnam

TWENTY-FIVE members of a cross-nation mafia-like ring were jailed for up to 18 years this morning for helping Chinese tourists to illegally cross the border to Vietnam and then robbing or extorting them there.

They were convicted of organizing, leading and taking part in a mafia-like organization, robbery, fraud, organizing smuggling and helping transport smugglers, Xinhua news agency reported.

The leaders, brothers Hang Yongjiu and Huang Yonghua, were jailed for 18 and 16 years respectively and Huang Yongjiu was fined 2.15 million yuan (US$315,000).

The brothers ran unlicensed tour guides at bus stations, hotels and ports in southwestern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Dongxing City, which borders Vietnam, prosecutors said.

The tourists were taken to a hotel operated by the ring in Mong Cai and then forced to buy fake luxury watches and jewelry at high prices. Those refusing to buy the products were robbed, the report said.

This is the first cross-nation gang case tried in Dongxing People's Court, according to vice director Huang Xiaoyong.
