Gang leaders sent to jail

EIGHTEEN of 118 people charged for their involvement in a mafia-like gang in southwest China's Guizhou Province have been jailed for up to 20 years, the Guizhou Daily reported yesterday.

Twelve were leading gang members jailed from five to 20 years, Weng'an County People's Court announced on December 31.

The other six, all government workers, were jailed for between three years and 12 years for protecting the gang after taking bribes.

The court heard that Xiong Jiaoxun, Nie Qichao and Deng Shaolun launched the gang in 1994. The ring soon attracted hundreds of members, expanding over the whole of Weng'an County.

Their crimes led to more than 10 injuries and state losses valued at 4 million yuan (US$585,884) in mining resources.

Lang Yonglin, Yang Zhaoming, Yang Yuping, Pan Jianhua, Mei Guisong and Bai Yi, all government workers, had protected the gang after accepting bribes.
