Gang member shot dead by police

POLICE shot dead a member of a car theft gang as he drove a car straight at policemen in Shanwei City, Guangdong Province.

Police said they caught a gang in the act of stealing a car from a busy road on Saturday night, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

Two gang members resisted arrest and drove the car straight towards police officers, injuring one, said the report. Police fired warning shots into the air and finally shot dead the driver, surnamed Xu, as he kept accelerating.

The injured policeman is in a stable condition, according to the report. Police said they caught a suspect surnamed Li at the scene, and another four later. They blame the gang for stealing nine cars this year.
