Gang sentenced to jail

SIXTY gang members in the largest-ever organized crime case in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, have been sentenced for crimes, including murder and gambling.

The leader of the gang, Li Haimin, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for eight criminal offenses, including intentional injury and illegal confinement, and he was also fined 40,000 yuan (US$6,070).

Shi Lisheng, another member of the crime ring, was sentenced to life imprisonment and stripped of political rights for life for murder, bribery and gambling. Shi was fined 800,000 yuan. Another member Rao Yuting was also given a life sentence for murder and other charges.

Tangshan Intermediate People's Court announced the verdicts on Thursday. The other 57 members received different jail terms.

The court found the mafia-style gang profited from operating casinos and sand quarries and illegal trading and trafficking in fireworks.

An example of the gang's nefarious activities came on January 30, 2009, when Shi ordered Rao and other gang members to -attack Wang Guanghui -during a fight. Rao later stabbed Wang to death, and the gang fled the scene.
