Gansu land official sentenced to life for corruption

THE former director of the Gansu Provincial Land and Resources Bureau was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for taking bribes and possessing properties of dubious origin.
Zhang Guohua and his wife Liu Shuping received 4.28 million yuan (US$672,058) in kickbacks for helping others obtain project contracts, bank loans and land-use permits between April 2001 and March 2011, the Lanzhou Intermediate People's Court said.
Prosecutors confiscated their assets worth 21.46 million yuan and foreign currencies of about US$200,000. Zhang failed to explain the sources of 9.73 million yuan of assets.
