Gas heating in Beijing’s downtown areas
Beijing will introduce heating produced with natural gas in its six downtown districts this winter as part of its anti-pollution efforts.
The third and final phase of Beijing’s southeast thermoelectric center in Chaoyang District has started a one-week trial. The gas-fired power plant will be officially commissioned before the heating season begins this winter, according to a joint statement yesterday from the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission and the Urban Management Commission.
The commencement of full operations at the Chaoyang thermoelectric center will mark the completion of Beijing’s four major gas-fired thermoelectric centers. together, they will reduce the city’s use of coal by 9.2 million tons a year.
Beijing’s six downtown districts — Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai and Shijingshan — will all have gas-fired heating this winter.
