Gas leak kills 3, production halted

PRODUCTION at a manganese plant in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was suspended after toxic gas killed three people and poisoned 21 others early yesterday morning.

Production at the Tianyuan Manganese Corp plant in Zhongning County of Zhong-wei City was completely halted at 12pm yesterday so an investigation could be carried out, said the Zhongning County government in a statement.

Hydrogen sulfide may have caused the poisoning, an initial investigation by Ningxia health authorities showed.

Workers were mixing manganese carbonate and sulfuric acid to make manganese when the accident happened at 12:40am, said Jiao Shuang, deputy general manager of the firm. Twenty-four workers at the scene showed symptoms of toxic gas poisoning.

Three died in hospital while three others are in critical condition, doctors said.

Investigations by the Zhongwei Environment Protection Bureau showed that nearby residents had not been affected.

Tianyuan Manganese Corp is one of the largest electrolytic manganese producers in the world with an annual output of 72,000 tons of the metal.
