Gas poisoning claims 10 lives in Shanxi power plant

THE death toll from a carbon monoxide poisoning accident occurred in a power plant in Shanxi Province rose to 10 this morning, as the latest air test shows no excessive amount of carbon monoxide in the accident area, China News Service reported today.

Authorities of Jiexiu City said the accident happened at about 1:24pm yesterday when 14 Beijing Firemate Technology Company workers were doing maintenance and repair work for a boiler in a power plant operated by the Antai Group. Three Antai Group employees who went to their rescue also got poisoned.

All the poisoned workers were soon sent to a local hospital but the three Antai Group employees and seven Firemate workers were killed. The hospital said the other seven injured people were in stable condition.

A local government spokesman said the cause of the tragedy is still under investigation.
