Gay pub closed to shun AIDS Day glare

A GAY pub funded by the government to help gays associate and learn AIDS prevention in southwest China's Yunnan Province was closed temporarily ahead of the World AIDS Day today to avoid glaring media attention.

The nameless pub, nestled quietly without any sign in a small alley in the city of Dali, has remained closed since last Friday and its founder Zhang Jianbo hasn't decide when to reopen it, local Life News reported today.

A veteran dermatologist at Dali No. 2 People's Hospital, Zhang devoted himself to AIDS prevention in 1997 and has tried to create a legal and safe venue where people at high risk of HIV, particularly gays, can find company and gain knowledge about the fatal disease.

Since it opened last November, the pub has unexpectedly become a magnet for the media and curious public, scaring its customers away for fear of being spotlight, Zhang said.

Zhang made a hard decision to temporarily shut the pub, waiting the hype of World AIDS Day to fade away.
