Giant panda cub passes away after only 5 days
A giant panda cub died on Tuesday morning, five days after it was born at a breeding center in Chengdu, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, the center said yesterday.
The youngster died about 5am, shortly after its mother had fed it. The cub was immediately taken out and found to be not breathing.
A vet confirmed its death and an autopsy later showed no abnormality in its organs.
The cub was born to 9-year-old Aibang on Friday, making it the new arrival this year.
Staff at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding had been monitoring the cub around the clock and said there had been nothing wrong with its temperature, feces and diet in the first four days after its birth.
The cub, which had yet to be named, grew from 145 to 172 grams during this period.
The breeding center said sudden deaths are very rare among giant pandas born in captivity, but added that they bear similarities with sudden infant death syndrome in humans.
The dead cub’s organs have been sent to a laboratory for analysis, the center said.
