Giant pandas settle into their new home

TWO giant pandas have arrived in northeast China’s Jilin Province and their keepers are preparing them for their public debut next Wednesday.

The 8-year-old male and 7-year-old female have taken up home at the Siberian tiger breeding base where they will spend the next three years, said the provincial forestry department.

As well as their public duties, the bears will be the focus of a number of research projects, officials said.

No giant pandas have ever spent such a long time in north China, which is known for its cold winters. The bears prefer the warmer climes of southwest Sichuan Province.

Before their move, the pandas lived at the Dujiangyan Base of China Giant Panda Protection and Research in Sichuan.

Their new home is a 900-square-meter house, with outside areas covering another 4,800sqm, officials said, adding that the des-res cost about 14 million yuan (US$2.25 million) to build.

“The house has air conditioners, humidifiers, electric heaters and ultraviolet disinfection lamps to help the newcomers adjust to the local environment,” said Wang Haijun, from the tiger breeding base.

“Meanwhile, bamboo will be transported from Dujiangyan every week for them to eat,” he said, adding that the bears eat about 50 kilograms of bamboo a day, plus carrots and apples.

A team has been set up to handle emergencies and experts from Sichuan will remain with the pandas for at least three months.

According to a survey released in February, as of the end of 2013, China had 1,864 wild pandas and 375 in captivity.
