Ginger laced with sulfur

UNSCRUPULOUS vendors contaminated more than half the ginger sold in the northern city of Xi'an with sulfur, in a bid to make it look more expensive, watchdogs discovered.

During a routine check, business officials in the capital of Shaanxi Province saw that ginger on display at a major food market was a different color to that found behind stalls, reported China Radio International yesterday.

Ginger smoked with sulfur gives it a brighter appearance, pushing up its price.

Having noted a strong smell of sulfur, officials from Xi'an's industry and commerce administration confiscated a stall offering brightly colored ginger.

Other vendors then began removing their stock in an attempt to avoid seizure.

An industry insider estimated that smoked ginger accounted for 60 percent of local market share.

Smoking ginger with sulfur adds around 0.80 yuan (1 US cent) to the price of each kilogram, while the cost of the sulfur to smoke a ton of ginger is only 6 to 8 yuan.

Medical researchers have found that if sulfur-smoked food is eaten over a long period it can harm the nervous system and lead to liver or kidney failure.
