Girl, 12, holds 3-year-old brother to jump from 3rd floor to escape fire
A 12-year-old girl holding her little brother jumped from their third-floor apartment to escape fire last Saturday in Hankou, Hubei Province. Their handicapped father died in the fire.
The girl, identified as Sisi, suffered burns over 40 percent of her body surface and a fractured hand. Her condition was critical when she was brought to the hospital, doctors said.
Her 3-year-old brother had burns over 30 percent of his body surface. Both are now in stable condition after treatment and are waiting for further surgeries, the Wuhan Morning Post reported today.
A gas explosion ripped through Sisi's home on Saturday evening and caused a fire. She had no choice but to jump with her brother. "Please save my brother's life," Sisi said before she fainted.
Her mother said Sisi is clever and kind and always takes care of her little brother.
The two children's treatment is estimated to cost at least 400,000 yuan (US$62,590), a staggering sum for their mother who earns only 1,700 yuan a month. The woman said the family's savings had all been spent on her husband who lost a leg in a car crash.
