Girl, 14, under inquiry over death of baby boy

A GRADE 7 student in southern China's Guangdong Province is under police investigation for allegedly cutting her new-born baby's throat.

The girl, 14, from a middle school in a northern Guangdong township, allegedly gave birth to a boy on November 4 in her dormitory room on the fifth floor and then cut his throat with scissors and glass before throwing him out of a window, Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News reported yesterday.

The corpse was discovered about noon beside the school wall. A vice headmaster, surnamed Xu, told the newspaper that a teacher found the dead infant in a black plastic bag.

The girl was soon confirmed as the mother and sent to the town health center because of her weak condition.

She was taken away by police for further investigation two days later.

Xu declined to confirm any details about the girl's pregnancy or her baby's death.

Both the school authority and the girl's parents had no idea she was pregnant.

A police officer in charge of the case said the girl felt a belly pain about 5am and gave birth in her room.

Her roommates found blood on the floor at the noon break despite her cleaning up the room. She told them she was having her period.

Police have confirmed the baby was thrown by the girl from the fifth floor and are awaiting forensic tests.

"We know who the boy's father is," the officer said.

As the girl is only 14, the unidentified man may face rape charges as having sex with a girl of that age is deemed rape regardless of consent.
