Girl, 15, held for killing granny, burning home

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, is being held by police for killing her grandmother and then burning their house to destroy evidence, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Guangzhou police said the girl, surnamed Wang, allegedly strangled her 60-plus-year-old grandma, surnamed Hou, to death at their home in Yongguang Village on Saturday night, set the house ablaze and escaped around 11pm.

Some witnesses said they first saw fire and smoke coming from Hou's room and then found her lying on the ground. Firefighters and ambulance arrived soon and confirmed Hou was already dead.

Neighbors said there were also knife wounds on Hou's body and a three-meter-long bloody trail in the garden.

They said the girl's parents were divorced and she was living with her grandparents. But she had a bad relationship with her grandma and they often quarreled.

Wang was caught the next morning.

She confessed to police that she had strangled Hou to death during a fight and then burned the house to destroy all criminal evidence.
