Girl, 17, falls into coma after H1N1, rabies jabs

A 17-YEAR-OLD girl has been in a deep coma for days after getting vaccinated against H1N1 flu and rabies in Guangdong Province, the latest in a series of adverse reactions to vaccinations reported in the province.

Medical experts said a link between the swine flu vaccination and her coma couldn't be ruled out although they failed to agree on what has caused the girl's condition, the New Express newspaper reported yesterday.

The girl, identified by the newspaper as Xiao Hong, was hospitalized at Yangjiang No.1 People's Hospital on March 17 after she started vomiting and running high fevers following a fifth rabies shot four days before.

The student at Yangjiang City Medical School reportedly was bitten by her dog on February 10 and received the first rabies shot two days later. At that time she had developed a rash.

She was vaccinated against swine flu at her school on December 15, the report said, citing her sister.

Doctor Jiang Yue said Xiao has an infection that is neither H1N1 flu nor rabies.

Medical experts have yet to agree on her diagnosis, according to Feng Rongtian, an official with Yangjiang City's Disease Control and Prevention Center. It could be related to the swine flu vaccine, he noted.

Xiao took a cold shower after the flu vaccination, which could have contributed to triggering the illness, he added.

Feng said the swine flu vaccines in Yangjiang are safe in terms of purchase and transport.

More than 70,000 people have been vaccinated in Yangjiang. Only four people reported adverse reactions, mostly minor symptoms that include dizziness, fevers or vomiting, Feng added.
