Girl, 4, dies in locked school bus
A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl has died on a kindergarten bus after being forgotten in scorching heat in south China's Guangdong Province.
Police are investigating while the bus driver and a teacher who accompanied the children could face criminal punishment, today's Nanfang Metropolis Daily reported.
The girl's parents told the newspaper that they had reached a compensation agreement with the kindergarten and don't plan to seek criminal penalties against staff.
According to Maoming City education authority, the girl took the bus to the Tongyi Kindergarten on the morning of July 1.
When the bus arrived and everyone got off, the girl bent to pick up a drink that fell, making her invisible to the teacher and the driver who made a last double check that everyone had left, the report said.
The driver and the teacher locked the door. The girl was not found until her teachers mounted a search and discovered her lying in a coma in the bus. She had vomited, the report said.
The girl was sent to a local hospital but died later.
The kindergarten, which the education authority said is licensed, closed that day.
According to lawyer Zhu Yongping, the bus driver and the teacher could face the charge of negligent homicide.
