Girl, 6, tortured by parents after 4 failed adoption attempts

A couple accused of torturing their 6-year-old girl because they failed in four attempts to have her adopted were detained by police for investigation, today's Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The couple in Houjie Town in Dongguan City of Guangdong Province, allegedly used a lighter to burn the young girl, scalded her with hot water, and tried to suffocate her out of frustration.

The local women's federation is also involved in investigation.

The couple, not identified by names, have three other children. They first tried to give the girl to the husband's boss for adoption but the baby was returned two months later.

In 2005, the girl was sent to a couple in central China's Hunan Province but the couple divorced later and put her in the care of the woman's mother. Soon she was sent back to live her mother's sister but did not stay there long. Finally she was returned to her parents in April this year.

The parents said they beat her to correct her behavior as she was not obedient.
