Girl, 8, near completion of 700km hike to family's hometown

AN 8-year-old girl is days away from completing a 700-kilometer journey by foot from Shenzhen, in south China near Hong Kong, to Shaoyang in south-central China's Hunan Province, Southcn.net reported today.

The girl, named Zeng Ziqi, and her father had arrived at Luhongshi town in Hunan Province, the website reported. The family is from Shaoyang.

Ziqi began the journey with her mother on July 13 after her father proposed the hike as a way to strengthen her willpower.  Her father is a self-made wealthy man after spending 20 years working in Shenzhen, a special economic zone, the site reported.

They walked along roads and trails, but didn't sleep out at night -- they went to hotels and restaurants to clean up, eat and sleep.  If they were too far, the father's driver took them to a hotel and then returned them where he'd picked them up the next day to resume the hike.

The mother and daughter reached Guangzhou city in three days. When they got to Lianzhou city, in western Guangdong Province on July 25, her mother was worn out even though the girl wanted to keep going.

The father took up the hike with her in order to finish the journey.

A physical education teacher in Cuiyuan Middle School in Shenzhen said a child's age and physical development should be taken into consideration when thinking about whether it is appropriate for a child to undertake a hike of more than 20km a day in hot weather.
