Girl, 8, raped in dormitory

AN 8-year-old girl sleeping with another 13 students was raped in her dormitory at a rural school in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Her parents blamed the school's poor security for the attack.

Local police are investigating, today's Yunnan Information Daily reported.

Xiao Li (not her real name), a grade-three pupil at the Tuoke Primary School in Xuanwei City, was assaulted early in the morning of May 12, her mother, surnamed Pu, told the newspaper.

Because of the impoverished conditions at the rural school, 14 girls were accommodated in seven beds in Xiao Li's dormitory, Pu said.

That morning, Xiao Li woke to feel somebody pressing on her in the dark. Her cry woke her roommates but none of the frightened girls tried to stop the attack.

The man escaped before the girls could see his face. He was described as being of medium build and wore black clothes and cloth shoes, according to Xiao Mei (not real name) who shared the bed with Xiao Li.

Teachers called Pu after learning of the attack.

Pu went to the school and took the girl to hospital where she was operated on and treated for blood loss.

The school's principal, who was not named in the report, told Yunnan Information Daily that there was no security guard at the school because they could not afford one. But teachers made regular checks every night, he said.

The school has sent 16,000 yuan (US$2,344) to Pu to cover her medical expenses.

Pu said she is deeply concerned about Xiao Li, not only for the physical injuries but the potentially huge psychological damage.
