Girl, 9, gives birth to boy

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl has given birth to a boy in a Changchun hospital, capital city of northeast China's Jilin Province.

The girl had a caesarean birth and both she and the 2.75kg baby are doing well, today's Changchun-based City Evening News reported.

The newspaper did not name the hospital but cited nursing workers as saying she was from Jilin's Songyuan City. The father is unknown and the girl's parents have reportedly called police.

According to Chinese laws, anyone having sex with a girl under the age of 14 is convicted of rape.

It is rare for such a young girl to give birth to a live baby, according to doctors.

The youngest known mother in the world is a five-year-old girl who gave birth to a 2.7kg baby in May 1939 in Peru via caesarean.
