Girl disfigured by burns inflicted by spurned lover

A 17-year-old girl was disfigured by her admirer who poured petrol on her and set her on fire last Thursday because she turned down his love, Anhui TV reported today.
Zhou Yan, a high school student in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, suffered burns over 30 percent of her body. Her neck, breast and face were badly burned and one of her ear was lost, the TV report said.
The attacker, Tao Rukun, is Zhou's classmate and suitor. Zhou's mother has demanded 10 million yuan (US$1.59 million) and a house worth 2.8 million yuan as compensation.
The boy's father, who is the office director of the Hefei Auditing Bureau, claimed that his son was dating with Zhou and was infuriated to find Zhou have another boyfriend, the report said.
But the girl's mother dismissed his claim, saying Zhou never had any boyfriend. She also said she didn't demand the 12.8-million-yuan compensation. "Tao's family only paid around 330,000 yuan for my daughter's medical treatment. I only asked them to offer my poor daughter 2.8 million yuan to treat her disfigured face."
