Girl, hit unconscious by attacker, dumped as dead tramp
POLICE in Guoyang County, Anhui Province mistook a badly-injured high school student as a dead tramp and a funeral car driver abandoned her in a nearby county, leaving the half-naked girl lying in a dried ditch in cold weather for one night.
The girl identified as Xiao Li was hit in the head by an attacker on the night of March 11 as she was walking alone from school to her home in Gaogong Town, the local Xin'an Evening News reported today.
The 18-year-old girl was found lifeless in a ditch the next afternoon by a villager in Gaogong Town. "Her pants were stripped off; her face was swollen; and her hair was covered with dirt and leaves. It's hard for us to recognize she was Xiao Li," said the villager surnamed Yang.
Local police came after receiving his report and figured that the girl was a tramp who had been frozen to death. The officers asked for a funeral car from the civil affairs bureau to take the "body" away, without contacting a coroner to verify her death, the paper said.
The funeral car driver didn't take the girl to a crematory but dumped her about 10 kilometers away in another ditch in Erlang County, said prosecutors of Guoyang County which administers over Gaogong Town.
On the morning of March 13, people found Xiao Li and called the police and ambulance. She was immediately admitted to a local hospital for treatment, but is still listed in critical condition, the paper said.
Guoyang County prosecutors and police have launched an investigation into the case, the paper said.
