Girl jumps to death after criticism
A 13-YEAR-OLD girl in Hunan Province leapt to her death from her classroom after she was ordered by a teacher to write a long self-criticism for misbehavior.
This was the tenth time or more the girl, surnamed Xu, had been punished like this, her parents told today's Shanghai Evening News.
The girl studied at the Chenzhou No. 9 Middle School, where teachers often told students to write long self-criticisms to explain misbehavior, the report said. Each report had to contain at least 1,000 characters.
Initial police inquiries show that the girl jumped to death from the fifth story of the school at noon on March 24 after being punished again by her English teacher, surnamed Li. The girl had been accused of talking in class.
While she was writing the criticism, one of her classmate told her another criticism from a previous incident was now overdue. Other classmates began making fun of her.
In her pencil box, the girl left a message for her English teacher: "I have no any other complaints about you, teacher Li, except that I'm fed up with writing self-criticisms. Please don't ask me to write any more."
The police have not launched a criminal investigation, the girl's father said.
Students say the teacher involved has not been punished.
School principal Wang Zhaoxiong declined to comment, though he agreed that it was tough for a teacher to ask students to write 1,000-character self-criticisms.
