Girl missing after falling into ditch

A 12-year-old girl is missing after falling into a ditch in Harbin city, northeastern Heilongjiang Province, yesterday afternoon.

The parents of Wang Chunlan and dozens of volunteers are searching for the child, who was carried away by fast-flowing waters.

Together with professional rescue teams, neighbors are dredging both sides of the drainage ditch.

The girl had volunteered to buy groceries for her mother Sunday afternoon.

But on her way there, she slipped on melting snow and slid into the ditch, said a fellow village girl who was accompanying her.

While the ditch was only about one meter deep it was torrential and Wang quickly disappeared, said the girl.

She rushed to inform Wang's parents, and the missing girl's desperate mother repeatedly jumped into the ditch searching for her daughter.

An excavator was sent to help open the ditch. But there was still no sign of the missing girl, local media reported.

Last month, a young college student went missing after falling into an uncovered manhole during a torrential rain in Changsha city, Hunan Province.

Hundreds of rescuers were unable to find her.

The cover was said to have been dislodged by the heavy rain.

That incident raised nationwide safety concerns about public drainage systems.
